Ethel G. Harvey Award Nomination Form
The President’s Award in Honor of Ethel G. Harvey is the only Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital honorary award for girls. It is named in honor of Ethel Harvey, Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital President from 1972-1978. The award is unique in that selection is made by girls who choose from among nominees the one they feel best exemplifies the criteria outlined below. The award is presented annually at the In Your Honor ceremony.
Selection Criteria
A Girl Scout Junior, Cadette, Senior or Ambassador in Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital who has not received this award before and has: demonstrated their leadership abilities within Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital, contributed to the growth of Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital, demonstrated poise and sensitivity towards others, demonstrated both written and oral communication skills, actively participated in Girl Scout activities to help bring unity among the diverse elements within Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital.
Nomination Process
Any registered member of Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital, Girl Scout or adult, may nominate a Girl Scout for this award. The nominating individual must solicit a letter of nomination from a person outside of Girl Scouting, but with knowledge of their Girl Scout activities. These must be submitted via this online form by 5:00 PM on March 15th. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of Girl Scouts.

1. Describe how nominee has provided leadership this year (July 1 of previous year to present) to the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital and their individual community. Give examples of this leadership. Discuss how they have led groups and tell about the groups. Describe how the nominee has demonstrated their ability to work with diverse groups, and work with groups in decision-making, goal setting and accomplishing work.
2. Describe how the nominee’s actions this year (July 1 of the previous year to present) have contributed to the growth of Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital. How have they made a difference in helping reach youth and adults in diverse communities? How have they been a role model for youth, including being interested in becoming or remaining a member of Girl Scouts? How have they made a difference in the lives of youth and adults?
3. Describe the participation of the nominee in Girl Scout activities this year (July 1 of the previous year to present) that have helped bring unity to diverse communities within Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital and their own neighborhood, school, religious or other group. How have they reached out to include others? How have they worked to pull together people who are diverse in their ethnic origin or identification, religious beliefs, socioeconomic backgrounds, age, creed, or disabilities? How have they shown initiative in addressing inclusiveness? How do they extend a welcoming hand to everyone in their daily activities?
4. Describe the ways in which the nominee demonstrates poise and is sensitive towards others. Describe their communication skills, both oral and written and provide examples of activities or opportunities in which they have demonstrated these skills. Give examples of instances in which they have displayed poise before others. Give examples of their communication skills, such as speaking before large audiences or groups of different ages; or of written articles or other material about Girl Scouting or their other community interests.
